Hardest Thing About Living Abroad

There are many things that come with living abroad.  The mere fact that I am 8 hours ahead of my home city makes it difficult to take to anyone in a timely matter.  Living here I have missed weddings, baby showers, the birth of my friends kids.  This year I have been hit with something that I have always been afraid of; my mother will need an important surgery next month.  There is not negotiating about this, my mother is very important to me and I need to be there.  I have already told my principal and I will be out of work for 2 weeks once we get the surgery date.  I will have to fly home and miss two weeks of work.  I will not be paid, but sometimes it is not always about the money.  Hopefully, everything will be fine.

  1. Dear Miss Haneefa, just wanted to say thank you for writing this blog. I am a Black Science teacher from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean and I just moved to Kurdistan, Iraq. I have been here for two months and was beginning to feel alone (only black person that I know for miles), everyone speaking in Kurdish (I am learning) or Arabic, going out feels like I am an exhibit I get so many stares, no plus size clothing stores. Then I came across this blog, someone did this before me and was successful, I can do it too. So thank you for sharing your experience.
