  7. Hey Miss Haneefa!
I have been reading your blog since its inception. While I did not blog when I was in Europe, I am glad that you have chosen to blog heartily about a country and road less traveled. After all of your fantastic, detailed blogs, I feel like I can move there for a year -savings and job in mine-and not only survive, but LIVE! I know that it is not all great, but the majority seems awesome! I really appreciate you writing from a for lack of a better terms-"Black Girl in Abu Dhabi'" perspective. You have answered every question that I can possibly think of from finances, to clothes, learning about the culture, and other things. Thanks for writing and be blessed!

  9. I found your blog when I was googling plus size shopping in Abu Dhabi. I am visiting some family next week for Spring Break and I wanted to gauge how much I should expect to shop while I am there. I have been browsing your blog and I have found it incredibly helpful. I am currently studying English and working toward my TEFL certificate with hopes of teaching English abroad. I am mostly interested in teaching in the UAE but I'd love to hear how you enjoyed the JET program.

    1. JET program was great. Then again I was there over 10 years ago so I am not sure how it is now. I had such a wonderful experience loving in Japan. Would definitely go back.

  13. Hello, I am a teacher in the US and my school is closing at the end of the school year. I decided to think outside the box and do something different. I have taught ESL for a number of years and I am TEFL certified. I have been thinking about UAE and responded to a ad recently. I am an 'older' teacher who is young at heart and I am fascinated by your blog. Its been so helpful filled with information thank you so much for writing it.

  19. Hi! I'm interviewing with ADEC next week. I've been doing a lot of research about Abu Dhabi and surrounding areas. In general, I'm reading that the people are kind and the environment is very safe. However, I'm really curious about the safety of North American citizens. Do you ever feel threatened in any way since warnings went out in December about attacks against American citizens, especially teachers?

    1. Although alerts went out to North American citizens, I still fell as safe as ever living in this country. I never feel threatened and I can honestly say that I feel safer here that in Montreal at times. I don't have to worry about police pulling me over for stupid reasons or making sure that I speak French to officers so t hat they don't get angry at me. Good luck on your interview.

  21. Hello!
I am so thankful that you are posting such vital information for those of us looking to move. I have begun my application process and I am going extensive research. I few questions I have are:
How do you maintain your hair?
How do you dress so not to offend?
What is the social scene like?
Is there a tough transition in the language barrier?
    How are the living conditions?

    1. How do you maintain your hair?

I get my hair braided by some lovely Ethiopian ladies that have a salon, they do braids, sew ins and wash and sets. Some of my friends who have permed hair go to a lady in Abu Dhabi who has a salon in her home.

How do you dress so not to offend?

I usually wear long skirts and long sleeves shirts. On the weekends you can pretty much wear what you wear at home, especially when you go out.

What is the social scene like? There is plenty to do,parties and events every weekend. You will not be bored.

Is there a tough transition in the language barrier? There is no language barrier (no like in Japan at least). There are miss communications but that is part of life here.

How are the living conditions? Living conditions? As in housing we are given? It is good. Varies from building to building it depends where it has been placed.

      Hope that helps.
